What is NIST SP 800-171?

In short, DOD requires contractor or subcontractor storing, processing, or transmitting CDI (Covered Defense Information) and/or CUI (Controlled Unclassified Information) to get serious about cybersecurity. The DOD’s expectation is for contractors and subcontractors to improve their cybersecurity posture in accordance with industry security best practices.

Regulatory guidance and, more specifically NIST SP 800-171 is the framework the DOD chose for contractors and subcontractors to adhere to with regard to safeguarding CDI/CUI and to timely cyber incident reporting.

Why do I need to be NIST SP 800-171 compliant?

Compliance with this NIST framework is a DFARS requirement. If you are a DOD contractor or subcontractor you may be held accountable for non-compliance, and potentially lose contracts or subcontracts. Additionally, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) plans to extend this NIST framework to all non-federal organizations working with the federal government as early as 2019.
